Who says you can't wear white after Labor Day? In fact, that myth is so widely propagated and taken as gospel, that nobody seems to know where that cardinal rule of fashion originated. I'm here to set the record straight. (For the non-Americans, Labor Day is a national holiday meant to celebrate the workforce of our nation, the backbone of our economy.)
White clothing is often worn during the summer months as a way to keep cool. Many decades ago, the wealthy and affluent echelons of society would escape to the countryside every summer to frolic in white or light colored clothing, keeping cool while sipping their mint juleps and moscow mules. As more and more Americans became rich and super-rich, the "old money" women felt it necessary to indoctrinate trivial fashion rules to determine the "new money" from the old. One of those trivial rules was, you guessed it, wearing white after labor day. The women who wore it after Labor Day could be wearing thousands of dollars, but wouldn't get the time of day from the social circles who "mattered". Of course, Coco Chanel wore it year-round, which it just fabulous.
Today, you can wear white whenever you want - the old rules don't matter anymore, and I would argue never did.
