Chanel Classic Flap Review

chanel_classic_flap_jumbo5sm

I am absolutely obsessed with my dream bag–and I literally cannot believe it is finally in my hands. Since I was in college, I have lusted after the Chanel Classic Flap bag. I’ve always been a little 13-going-on-30 (also known as older than my age), preferring to wear pearls and lipstick when peers were wearing Soffes and scrunchies. There has never really been a question about size for my first (ahem) Classic Flap: Jumbo. You know how big my purses are. Five feet and change doesn’t deter this gal from big, honkin’ bags. I need to carry my iPad mini, phone, wallet, a few makeup essentials, and pen in my bag and believe it or not, the Jumbo fits it all (see the video below).

Since marriage is a two-way highway of communication, I wanted to get my hubby’s permission to make such an extravagant purchase. After I beat him into submission he agreed, I saved up money, sold a few bags I didn’t love as much, and voila! I found the bag destined to be mine from a high-end consignment site called Yoogi’s Closet. They’re a reputable retailer of authentic pre-owned luxury.

I enjoyed the experience, and recommend them to anyone–they’re authenticity experts, and they really know how to showcase a designer product. I do wish they gave free expedited shipping, considering I spent thousands! I saved $500 off the current regular retail price of this bag, and didn’t have to pay tax (saving me over $900 total). And this bag has barely been used, and it’s a 2012 model.

Click above to watch the video of my review, and a surprise little What’s In My Bag somewhere in the middle. (If you like my YouTube videos, feel free to subscribe so they’ll show up in your home feed on YouTube.com!) I know Chanel isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so please keep that in mind if you aren’t a fan, and also know that I’m not intending to offend, brag, boast, or otherwise “show off”–I’m simply one happy girl squealing to her friend (that’s you) about her latest purchase. Capiche?

I did make sure to get my bag authenticated with the experts in the Purse Forum immediately after snatching up the bag (I could return it as long as the Yoogi’s Closet tag was attached). No surprise here, it’s authentic, and I keep my Chanel authenticity card with the bag at all times, in case I stop by a Chanel boutique and need it serviced.

All in all, even though this is the most extravagant purchase I’ve ever made, I couldn’t be more satisfied. No regrets. I also enjoy regaining the closet space from selling unused or not-quite-as-coveted bags; and it makes sense to me, but it might be different for others. Would you rather have your one dream bag, or loads of non-dream-but-still-high-end bags?

Thirsty for more? Here are my previous What’s In My Bag posts/videos. Also, please vote for me!

Mont Blanc … fancy! Oh right, this is a Chanel bag video :)) I wish I could afford a Chanel classic flap bag but I’m saving my pennies to buy a flat or a house (and it’s not a justifiable expense in my current financial/student situation) but it definitely does look very nice. Though I would have gone for the gold version.

Do you prefer silver to gold?

OMG, LOVE this: “Five feet and change doesn’t deter this gal from big, honkin’ bags.” So you, so TX. And I know that you COMMAND those bags, babe. There’s just no stopping you!

I also love that your sweet hubby had to weigh in; you two took a similar approach…my hubby would advise the same, especially since HE’S the one who sells all my cast-offs and knows the value of designer items. Of course, I’m not really good at that selling-off-my-old-stuff-first bit, but I’m working on it!

I also have to agree on Yoogi’s Closet. So very coincidentally, I ordered a YSL Muse 2 from Yoogi’s last week, and I was extremely impressed with every aspect of the sale. Unfortunately, it was too big (can you BELIEVE that?)…I’m actually moving in the same direction with my bags as you (can you BELIEVE that?)—looking for more refinement. Large, but more structured and refined. An investment I won’t be selling on Poshmark a year later. The only thing I did not like about Yoogi’s was that I had to cop the shipping fee, and it was bloody $27! Ouch! Oh well. Teaches me to read a leeeeeeeettle longer befor I click BUY.

    xoxo

Super video! Enjoy the bag. It is gorge and you deserve it!

You’re hilarious. Sometimes I read your comments more than once. I’m so glad you liked Yoogi’s, and feel the same way about the shipping. And agog that we are having the same taste in bags! (Although, not really, since you have impeccable taste, it must mean I’m doing something right.) I also do not believe you when you say the bag was too big. Was it suitcase-sized or something?

Gorgeous! I absolutely love it. Congratulations!! One day I will own one as well. But as of now it is still out of reach for me. Even if only slightly.

I’ve done something similar recently though.. I’ve had a ton of impulse purchases among more contemporary mid-range designers (i.e. Rebecca Minkoff, Coach, MBMJ, etc.) And I’ve recently sold off several to fund my first Premier Designer bag- A Louis Vuitton. Well now I have two LVs and a few accessories, which probably could fund a Chanel.

I am also like you in the 13 going on 30 aspect. I’ve always had more sophisticated taste vs. my peers. I’d rather shop at Express than Aeropostale in high school. And while I do love the Chanel flap, and it is my Holy Grail of a bag, I think at 25 I wouldn’t get as much use out of it. It’s still a bit dressy for me. My LVs are more on the casual side and fit my day-to-day wardrobe in my small cornfield of a town.

I totally get the “Making it” purchase , whether it be a Tiffany necklace or a Chanel bag. My “Making it” purchase or splurge if you will was getting a cleaning person..oh that was incredible! I think tons of your readers will be interested in all the details you provided about the bag. You know there are so many of us out here who aspire to such purchases..and its interesting to hear the thought process behind the purchase of such an items (it also provides us with more rationale for doing it teehee!)

I loved the video and the bag. I am currently saving for mine and my feelings about the Chanel classic flap are exactly the same. I’m so happy for you :-)

I just bought my dream bag — a Celine Luggage Tote! I know the feeling of finally having something you’ve been lusting after — and thought you might never own — in your possession. Enjoy it!

You look so fresh and fashionable with your new haircut :D

It makes me glad to see you so happy in your videos! I could tell you were really satisfied with your new purchase – can’t imagine how excited you were when you first got it!

I just wish I could give you my opinion on something and I hope you don’t get offended.

So everyday when I go home I see a homeless man in the trainstation. He lives there with a buch of blankets and there’s all he owns. Pains me to see how cold me though because he probably doesn’t eat a lot. He covers himself all up, doesn’t even show his face to the world – I never saw it, just the tip of his head – and this makes see stuff in a whole different perspective and how it is outrageous the amount of money we spend everyday in this we do not need. What I’m trying to do is to buy things only when I need them. I have a packed wardrobe and I believe most of us do, yet I kept on buying new stuff simply because the new collections are beautiful and I want to look my best. The result : I ended up not wearing the majority of my stuff because I had too much.
Everytime I see that poor person I think how maybe he once had a job, money, a house and I can’t help to think that might happen to anyone, alerting me to the fact that money has to be spend wiselly And that the money people spend in ridiculously expensive stuff they don’t really need, could help to feed a person for at least months!

I’m not rich, utill recently my dad didn’t even had a job – he had lost it some months ago- and never in my life I owned high end stuff, but I felt like a have waaay much than it is required. I have several shoewear, loads of jackets, jeans (…) and I just don’t need more until my old clothes get messed.
I think it is wise to invest in something you need that is durable and great quality, although I believe, that at least in my country I could buy a bag for 200€ that you’d last me a lifetime. I don’t see myself spending 4000€ and more in a bag or anyother item knowing that people like that homeless man.

I think you are an inteligent person and that you feel confortable with my opinion and that you won’t be offended.
I’m not judging you in any way. I’ve been with this in my head for quite some time and just felt like sharing it with you. Who knows if it’ll change a bit our mind like it changed mine.

If you happen to read this and you feel like it, I’d be pleased to have a reply :D

    Keep happy :)
    x
    Sofia.

Congrats on the beautiful bag. You deserve it. I recently splurged on a Cartier Trinity Ring that I had been wanting for years, and I love it.
I would love to know which bags you got rid of.

Thanks! I was really apprehensive as I’m usually weird about pre-owned stuff, but it was in great condition, a few scratches on the lining on the inside, but I didn’t care too much. :) What are the deets on your medium flap?

    • says

I wish I had gone bigger because it doesn’t hold a lot. Once my wallet and lipstick and compact are in there anything else makes it hard to close and bulgy. I am used to lugging WAY more stuff! So i only use it to go out when I won’t be needing may items. I also bought used from a local upscale consignment place but I was very, very lucky. The original tags were in a pocket inside the bag and so was the receipt for the purchase by the old owner. I was able to authenticate it easily so I could send it to be cleaned.

Love the review! This bag is definitely on my must own in the next 5 years list ;) Thanks for the recommendations. I also adore your hair cut – your entire look in this video is fab! Cheers doll! And Congrats!

I had been coveting a Chanel flap for years…and finally got one from the Rue Cambon store when I went to Paris with my husband a couple of years ago. The whole experience was unforgettable. Mine is a maxi (I’m 5’7″) with gold hardware and I feel like a million bucks whenever I carry it. I love that it’s a truly timeless bag and I’m certain that one of my girls (I have two) will love it as much years from now. Enjoy your bag! It’s beautiful!
P.S. Your lips are awesome! What are you wearing here?

  13. says

Congrats on the bag! I can totally relate to this because after I started working I really wanted a certain designer bag and after many “discussions” with the husband I finally obtained it. I know it is ridiculous and superficial but we work hard and we deserve to buy things that make us happy! Can you please post more makeup tutorials (like for the look in this video) since I am very challenged in that area and I would love to see what’s in your work bag as well!

    cheers!

Hi Kristina, that’s a Chanel medium classic flap right? I love the snapshots you made. And I can’t see any scratches, so I guess you have a caviar flap bag. And for $900 off, well done, it’s a bargain.

I looked with my GF for the jumbo classic flap bag a couple months ago in Paris. The medium bag is sold out everywhere, I am not sure how it is in US, but Europe is going wild. A lot Asian tourist come to europe and buy not one but a whole bunch of bags. I have seen the medium bag in Hong Kong, they are 150% more expensive than Europe. How is the price in US?

  15. says

Your bag is an investment which over the years will increase in value. Congrats on your purchase! We recently had one online silver hardware 2012 jumbo and was snapped up instantly. You got a bargain!
