Closet Overhaul, Mani, & Makeup

I had always known that before the New Year, I would do a major closet overhaul. Becoming a fashion blogger has its perks, but finding room for the myriad apparel, shoes, & accessories I collect for my teeny tiny closet isn’t one of them. I also knew what would be involved (major clothing organization, donation of items to charity, and reorganization). I just didn’t know when I would bite the bullet.

On a whim, I just began to throw clothes out of my closet–it was 2:28pm on Tuesday. At 6:30, I was nearly finished. Two large sacks of clothing, and one large bag of shoes sit by my door waiting to be donated. Rows of shoes still sit outside my closet waiting for more shoe organization (a future Target trip).

But the best part is: I can finally open & close my closet door. Yay!

Here’s what my room looked like in the thick of it:

Yikes. I banned [houston] from entering my room until everything was complete.

Going through my clothing piece by piece really jumpstarted my noggin’–I’m totally inspired to create some new ensembles I never would have thought of before this closet overhaul! And I’m thinking of reopening Shop My Closet, and selling some new or gently used items, as well as vintage pieces (like the beautiful pink beaded number above). I have a bunch of Jeffrey Campbell, Miu Miu, and other items I’m interested in offloading for great prices. Would you be interested?

Also went in for a fresh CND Shellac manicure–this time getting two coats of “Gotcha”, a warm & comfy pink (self-described), with a coat of sparkly “Mother of Pearl” over it for fun. There’s quite a stir in the comments of my last Shellac post – people (mostly nail professsionals) are going nutso in the comment section! Check it out

Above is the more true-to-life color of Gotcha…leave it to my iPhone 4S to get the more accurate color representation…

And I’ve been playing around with makeup–usually at odd hours (like 8 o’clock at night…) and I have no idea why. I’ve always wanted to create gorgeous makeup tutorials on YouTube (like my favorite gurus – this one’s a new personal fave) but never actually have taken the plunge. Are you as addicted to YouTube tutorials as I am?

Well done Kristina! Your closet looks amazing! I so need to do an “overhaul” and reorganization of mine as well; the last time I did, I too had bags of clothing to take to donate. Regarding your idea of reopening Shop My Closet….. I would sooooo be interested, it is not even funny. I suspect that many, many of us would love that idea as well….we love your wardrobe girl!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have a fabulous New Year’s!

    Stephanie :)

I also wanted to clean up and reorganize my closet – usually I do it on the 1 january. yours looks really a lot better know! And the best thing is that you always find some “forgotten” stuff, it’s nearly like shopping ;-)
Please do a shop your closet (international?), I generally love your clothes and accessoires and I’d love to have a look at your things and buy them if they are my size etc.!
    xxx Anita

Your closet looks great! I did a closet overhaul a couple of months ago – it’s tough work! Love the mani and makeup, makeup tutorials on YouTube are my favorite videos to watch!

I did a total rehaul and revamp of my closet earlier this year. I did a post on it as well you should check it out. It really does give you a sense of clarity about your wardrobe when you do a little reorganizing. I found that I don’t shop as much as I used to and have really enjoyed reworking some old gems back into my wardrobe.

I recently completely overhauled my space! It took all day but was worth it (come see my post if you are interested- I also did a cosmetics overhaul which was epic!). I have such a limited wardrobe I envy yours…mine would take 10 minutes to overhaul!

First, let me say I just discovered your site yesterday and I LOVE it!!! I am big on closet organization. My closet must look perfect at all times :) Just wanted to throw in two helpful hints for the next time you decide to do an “overhaul” of your fashion good. One — try using the slimline hangers from RealSimple. You can get them at Bed Bath and Beyond or even Ross/Marshalls. They allow you to fit way more things into your closet (which is every gal’s dream right??) Also, they make everything seem like they “hang” better and they are easier on your clothes because they won’t stretch out the necklines of shirts/sweaters. Two — try using the pant clips for your skirts/pants. Those also take up less space creating more room for new things ;)

Yes! Double yes! I would love to see a shop your closet!

  • http://www.pennypincherfashion.com Penny Pincher Fashion

    a) YES we would be interested in shopping your closet…are you kidding me?!
    b) I just went through a closet makeover of my own & know how exhilirating it can feel c) LOVE makeup tutorials & I tend to play around with mine late at night too (haha) – I keep getting requests from my readers to do videos on how I do mine & I’m terrified. May be time to take the plunge, though :)

Great post – thanks for sharing!!

I wanted to see what the closet looked like when you were finished, looks great Kristina! I need to do that also only I don’t have as many lovelies as you do. Um yes, and I’d buy your things. Why not?! LOVE the manicure also.

I agree with whoever made the comments on hangers. I was going to suggest hangers that were all one color (you can’t believe how nice it looks), or going with all wood hangers (very luxurious but they are space hogs–I did this in my coat closet), or going with a Joy Mangano type hanger (Huggable Hangers–you could definitely get them to pony up for a complete set for a closet redo if you blogged about them! I have. )
Anyway…huge applause for taking the plunge. Organizing is so freeing yet so very hard to do.

My goodness what a great way to bring in the New year! Lol! As far as opening your “shop the closet” I say yes! Yes do it!

  • http://www.littlemissmama.com Tairalyn

Oh boy! Your before and after has reminded me I should be doing the same. Especially since it feels so good to start a fresh new year with a clean closet :)

YES YES I say do it! I’m pretty sure we would all love some gently used clothing. I was thinking about doing that myself one of these days.

I just feel compelled to respond to this post, just like I did on your twitter page under my name meganelena22. I LOVE watching youtube tutorials. It is a form of escape for me, from any type of daily stress, etc. Pixiwoo, Pixi2woo, and Lisa Eldrige are my favorites. But I am subscribed to lots of other people as well. I particularly love anything by anyone in the Pixiwoo/chapman family inner circle. They are so real and entertaining!

As for your closet overhaul, I agree with another comment that someone left further up about the space saving hangers. I actually bought a variety pack at the container store on Post Oak (I am also a houstonian) and love them. Next month I plan on going back for more. Good luck with your closet project!

I would love to LIVE in your closet!! Even the messier before version, lol. I love YouTube tutorials so much. I actually started making them two years a go. I would definitely be interested in shopping your closet!

My closet is a disaster zone right now. I’m in huge need of a closet clean up for the new year. Donate, consign and recycle.

Nice work on the closet… looks much better and impressed you can fit all your clothes in there!! I’m in the process of doing another look-thru to purge what I don’t really need. Love the new shellac color by the way… ready for some sparkle myself! Just have it on my ring finger right now but needs to be everywhere I’ve decided. :)

  • http://beautymustsformoms.blogspot.com/ Deirdre

Shopping your closet sounds like a must! You’ve inspired me to de-clutter a little, as well!

  • http://www.melissamevans.wordpress.com Melissa

Great job! I too just finished cleaning my bedroom closet. I don’t know what it is…must be something about this time of year…getting rid of last minute things that we don’t need/wear…making room for all the new things :)

  • http://www.beautifullyinvisible.com Beautifully Invisible

I think this must be the “clean-out-your-closet” time of the year. I just did the same thing myself, thinking it would take me an hour or so… and 4 hours later I was finally done. Yikes. Yours looks great and I’d be interested in a shop (though I would have to stick to accessories if I was buying!).

    Happy New Year!

  • Chaz

Oh man do I wish I lived near your Goodwill right now.
I would love to see what stuff you’d sell in a Shop My Closet. Sounds like fun! And I love the nail polish too.

  • http://sassypantsmomma.com Tricia@SassyPantsMomma

You have inspired me! How nice will it be to wake up to a clean organized closet on new years day?!? As for reopening shop the closet, yes please!

  • http://www.jeanofalltrades.com Jean of all Trades

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with closet issues. I revamped my closet this week after an entire shelf/rack came crashing down under the pressure of too much weight! I found a lot of items I’d never worn! So my new goal is to wear them all once before putting them in my closet. I have a post about my new challenge, that I’ll publish January 1st. Seems like a good time for starting new.

Your closet looks great. And so does the amazing pink polish!

  • http://www.fashionfrugality.com Katie

Ahh! Your closet turned out so well! A clean closet is one thing I have always been a stickler about – I cannot handle when my closet is unorganized. It’s probably the only thing I keep clean in life. Ha ha. :)

    Your makeup looks GORGEOUS!

  • http://www.atlanticstylediaries.com Chelsea @ Atlantic Style Diaries

Great job on the closet overhaul- that’s no small feat! My new years goal is to make over our spare room into a dressing room. Over the past 2 years I’ve gotten better at thinning my wardrobe but my stuff is still in 2 different closets! Also, I love your manicure, so pretty in pink! :)

This just inspired me to clean out mine. I try to do it with the seasons, but I still feel like it gets messy so fast.

  • http://www.live-life-in-style.com Shasie

I’ve actually been working on my closet this whole year! I just organized my shoes in my closet, but I still need to through and edit and get the pieces out that I don’t plan on wearing anymore! hahaa. Good job on your closet!

  • http://christiecream.wordpress.com Christie

Yes! I love the youtubers! My favorite is Lisa Eldridge–she does make up professionally and works on the 10 Years Younger show in the UK. Check her out!

Target shoe organizers have saved my closet! I love having them in nice, stacked rows…. and your closet may be tiny, but it’s HUGE compared to what are built in to old New Orleans homes. I wish we had one so big!
