Erin Condren Life Planner 2013/2014 Review

I don’t think anything has been more requested on my blog, than this review. Honestly, I’m blown away by how many of you clamored for me to review my new planner, an Erin Condren Life Planner 2013/2014 – Gold Edition. I’m seriously impressed! Up until a week prior to ordering, I had never heard of Erin Condren products before. Blog readers recommended her products to me and I finally succumbed. Once I watched the life planner video, I was sold. Of course, I watched a few YouTube reviews first before taking the plunge. Click to see the video review!

The Downside

On the other hand, the price is what may make some people reel in shock. $50-75 for a planner is simply too much to spend on a planner, regardless of the pretty wrappings and customization.

I may not be the best judge of this, since I tend to rationalize even the most ridiculously priced items (and in fact have quite the talent for doing so) but in the end the decision has to sit right with you. You have to either absolutely, 100% feel it’s a “no-brainer” decision to spend that kind of money, or I feel you will otherwise find every reason to justify it as being overpriced. And nothing feels worse than regretting a purchase.

No (Wo)Man Left Behind

There’s also something for everyone. I haven’t tried anything else (not even the accessories for the life planner other than those mentioned) but she also has sorority-themed planners, teacher planners, regular notebooks, personalized acrylic accessories, even iPhone & iPad cases. Truly remarkable.

The Verdict

Overall I’m absolutely IN LOVE with my planner. I’ve never stuck to a planner this long before (and yes, it has only been 2 months, which tells you how bad I normally am at planning). I think it’s because this planner is just so fun, and beautiful, I’m constantly motivated to carry it around, whip it out in public, and play with different colored pens and stickers. Maybe it’s childish, or maybe it’s genius. Either way, EC and her life planners have got it going on.

Thanks! It’s from H&M but quite a while ago!

I’m OBSESSED with the Life Planner — getting ready to order my 3rd one! I’ve thought about trying others, but the Life Planner is the perfect fit for both type-A avid planners or those wanting to get organized. I’ve done a review for one myself! So glad I found your blog!

Awesome! I wish I had discovered life planners years ago! Better late than never, I suppose. :)

I love planners. I find that when I write something down (as opposed to scheduling it in my iphone) I truly commit it to memory. This one is gorgeous!

I’ve been a Filofax user for YEARS, but just switched to the Erin Condren Life Planner. I love how colorful and fun it is while being functional (think I’ll get the gold edition next time!). I do color code by family member/function – it’s a lot easier for me since my husband travels a LOT, so I end up being a single mom a lot. This way, I can just glance at it and know if I need to attend to something. EC also has a $20 off coupon code for existing customers. I ordered a couple of notepads for my sons teacher for Christmas. Maybe with your coupon code, I’ll order some for myself! Thanks for the review!

I have used an Erin Condren planner since last year and I love it. Will be using your $10 code to order my 2014 planner! http://www.styleoyster.blogspot.com

I ordered my Life Planner and it has shipped! I’m so excited. I’m currently using another planner for 2013 so I ordered my Life Planner for 2014. Over the past 5 years I’ve used planners for EVERYTHING. I have a mile stone birthday this month and 2013 was a really bad year for me. So for my birthday present to myself, I picked up an Erin Condren Life Planner. Here’s looking up to 2014 :)

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

Early happy milestone birthday wishes to you, Lacey! I’m excited for you – and hope you enjoy your new planner next year!

  • Cin

I am the one who says $50 – $75 is TOOO much for a planner. That is utter ridiculousness to pay THAT much for just a bunch of pretty colored paper and metal spiral. You can make/design your own for much less if it’s something you must have.

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

Totally understand your viewpoint. I just wish I were creative/savvy enough to know how to make my own! And don’t worry, you’re not the only one who thinks it’s too much to pay–it’s the most common complaint people have with her planners. In fact, a lot of her items are on the pricier side; I know that, in particular, a lot of monogram items are found less expensive on other sites that specialize in monogramming!

  • Valerie Williams

I have used her Life Planner for two years and I’m going to order a new one for next year soon. I have also gotten my sister hooked as well. It’s my birthday gift to her every year. :) We use it faithfully, which is saying something. I’m like you, I used to get a planner and after a month of use it would be gathering dust.

It has the perfect setup for me, the colors and designs that change each month prevent me from getting bored, and the customizations and accessories are great! I love her site and the new designs and products she is constantly coming out with. Plus she really listens to customer feedback when she’s coming out with new ideas. That’s how she changed the month view to 2 pages instead of one and laminated the monthly tabs. I get the basic $50 one which is still great and she is always sending out discount codes.

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

You’re so right, valerie, I love that she is so responsive to customer feedback. I am happy to hear that so many people are repeat customers, that’s always a good sign. :)

I feel obligated to say that I really dislike your attitude about why people would have a problem spending that kind of money on paper. I used to love reading your blog, but after the last few videos I’ve seen, today I am unsubscribing. There is nothing wrong with liking expensive things, I have an Erin Condren planner too, but there is something off-putting about your attitude towards those who may think that certain things are not worth the price. You seem instantly defensive towards people who have different opinions before they are even expressed. I am disappointed, as I have enjoyed your blog for years. You seem like a great person, but less sensitive to others now than you were in the beginning.

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

I’m sorry that you feel that way, Jace–I truly am. It is never my intention to disappoint my readers – and I feel truly awful for doing that to you. I guess I let my passion for this female, successful American entrepreneur get ahead of my knowledge that everyone has a right to their own opinion–especially about how much is too much money to spend–on anything! And you’re right, after rewatching the video myself, I do appear preemptively defensive, for no good reason at all.

I’m truly saddened to lose you as a reader, but I respect your decision and I hope that someday I’ll see you back here. Please know that I take your comments here, today, to heart. I truly do.

      Much love,
      Kristina

It’s all about freedom. Live and let live. And don’t worry about what something else thinks.

  • AishaJMM

I enjoyed your review, and if I were a planner person I’d be saving up for one of these. Really, I would. I’ve just been using a wall calendar and memorizing important dates for years and haven’t missed an appointment — yet. ;-) The quality does look worth the price, however. And I really like the designs of her other products as well.

    • AishaJMM

I also wanted to say … the reason why I think these planners are worth the price is because these look like something a person could keep for years, kind of like a scrapbook or a diary. Calendars and other planners are usually just tossed once the new year starts. Again, I don’t think I’ll be buying one right away — I’m just now trying to get better about adding appointments to my iPhone — but these do look good.

      • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

Absolutely Aisha. I know people who save their used-up EC life planners to keep as life mementos and essentially life “records”.

  • Heidi

This is perfect timing – my former Nest Board has been going nuts over these planners lately. I, for one, have never been a big planner person. I never stuck with them and never thought to even try to use one. However, my hubs uses his planner religiously. He uses his planner to organize all of our bills and that’s how he keeps on track of our budget. I didn’t know that until I came home early one night last week and found him with his planner. I have a newfound appreciation of them!

This is SUCH a beautiful planner. I would absolutely love to own one. Although the price tag seems hefty, a non customized and much less well-thought-out and aesthetically pleasing planner from Staples can easily set you back $30 to $40. So maybe $50 really isn’t as unreasonable as some may make it out to be. Thank you for posting such an in-depth review!

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

Oh wow I didn’t know they were so closely related in price! Come to think of it, you’re absolutely right.

  • Leonore

I can see being excited about this beautiful customized planner. I would love to have one of my own but with certain things price is a factor in my purchase decisions. I see absolutly nothing wrong with your video or your attitude towards this super cool purchase. Great video PSS girl!

Thank you Leonore! I appreciate your support!

Hi! I’ve enjoyed seeing Vahni’s post regarding her Filofax and now yours on this Erin Condrey organizer. I had never heard of her before now. I just can’t seem to get excited about keeping my calendar on my phone….I love hand writing and the tactile experience of keeping a paper calendar. My husband turned me on to a system that he read about on Life Hacker (wish I could remember the name of it!). But the gist of it is that you can take any notebook (I use a moleskin) and you hand create exactly what you need. Start out on the first page and create a table of contents, and then create your calendar from there. It’s actually really great and really functional! I have spent so much money buying planners that I thought were cute or seemed to have everything I need, only to toss them aside because they just don’t feel like “me”. Like I’m trying to make myself fit that planner rather than vice versa. A much cheaper system with more customized use, obviously without any bells and whistles and extremely paired down.

As far as the price, meh, there’s always going to be expensive versions of just about everything. I really don’t have a problem with that. I just have to make sure, for myself, that I’m not buying into the whole, “Wow! It’s so expensive it must be FABULOUS!!” mentality.

It’s a beautiful planner! So glad you are enjoying it! Serene

For me, despite the design, it’s a bit much to spend… I’m of the opinion that paper is less reliable than electronics ;) I love that my email will intelligently detect appointments and prompt me to add them to the calendar and that it goes everywhere on the cloud, whereas I’ll forget to write things down. However, it’s very pretty.

But I agree with you on price… It’s all about value. If you get a good value out of it, the price is not too steep. If you wouldn’t (like me), it’s a no-go. What I don’t like is an attitude of, if someone doesn’t want to spend (or doesn’t have to money to spend) on something, then you can’t spend it either because it’s frivolous/a waste. I run into that attitude a lot, and that’s what I felt you were trying to address in the video– talking about why it was valuable for you.

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Pretty Shiny Sparkly™

Thank you for recognizing that and for addressing that as well. I agree with you completely!

  • Jen

This reminds me of the old Franklin planners, but way more customized and way more attractive. Yes, $50-75 is a lot for a planner, but if it keeps you organized and you use it, that is PRICELESS!! Love the personalized stickers. Thanks for sharing!

  • Sarah

I LOVE this planner. I unfortunately forgot to buy it when it came out in June, but am still debating on getting it. It is the best planner I have ever had! Love your reviews, and I just have to say you handle critical comments with class. I love your blog!

  • Kelly

    You said ‘Merica! ha!
I’m am very glad you noted about the time til delivery. I really thought something was wrong with my order until I received it in the mail and realized WHY it took so long.
I really like how you can choose what months to start and end with when placing the order.
Your video helped me to remember to use the weekly calendar portion – I was running out of room on the monthly calendar! :-/

  • Jessie

Love this planner!!great video. Did I miss the $10 off link? These will be great gifts for my sisters for x-mas!!

  • http://www.horsesandheels.com/ Raquel Lynn

Planners are my survival kits, I love still writing things down despite having all of this technology at our finger tips.

  • zeelemons

Is the link still working for $10 off? It won’t subtract it for me :(

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Kristina Braly

Yes, you have to use it to sign up for a new account. It won’t work on an old account.

  • jodi hammond

KRISTINA does the planner have blank tabs so that you can have folders? For example, one for books i might want to read, things i need to purchase, a different section for each member of family that i might need to do things for, a section for dishes i might want to cook? thanks jodi

    • Tammy

No, there are no blank tabs but you could always buy some from an office supply store and add them to the notes section!

  • Adrienne

Hi Kristina! I first found you while researching the Erin Condren planner. I have since ordered mine and LOVE IT!!! Since then, I’ve been watching your beauty videos and loving them. So helpful! I just bought my first BB cream from Skin 79. I have normal/dry skin so I’m going to try the VIP Gold Collection. But I’m writing now to tell you that of all your videos that I’ve watched your make up in this video is my favorite for you. Very natural, classy and really shows off your blue eyes. So… I was wondering, if you can remember, what make up you were wearing? You look gorgeous! I didn’t see any info about make up in the comments. And I know this was supposed to be about the planner, but I’d really like to know. Take care! Happy Early Thanksgiving! <3

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Kristina Braly

Dang, you know it’s been so long I honestly can’t remember! Fortunately I believe I wrote it down in the info bar on the YouTube video page here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVdJiPUrryg hope that helps!

      • Adrienne

        Great, thanks!

The planners are beautiful but this company cares nothing about their customers! My husband ordered a planner for me at the beginning of December. Today is January 5th and its still not here! The day he ordered the planner there was a problem with the shipping. He was charged $35 for international shipping. They did refund it and still charged him $8 for shipping. We got the shipping confirmation so I assumed that the planner was on the way. I received an email today that it was in “production”. Really???? They keep apologizing but its not enough when someone is paying $50 for a planner and had to buy another one because 2014 is already here!

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com/ Kristina Braly

That’s so unfortunate! I agree the company is really struggling with growing pains. I hope they get their act together.

Hi Kristina! Thank you for the review! I want to order the planner but I don’t think the link for the discount is working. I clicked on the link and made an account and placed an order. I got all the way to the payment screen and I did not receive the discount. Is the link no longer working?

  • Corinna Bonk

I bought one and I’m very excited. I love planners and stationary type products. Having said that, while it is somewhat customizable, I do find that it’s hard for someone who doesn’t have a lot of money to justify spending $50 on a planner. I did and I choose to spend the little spending money I have each paycheck on things like this but I can completely understand why someone wouldnt be able to. Some are just not that lucky – and this calendar wouldnt be for them; a cheaper one would be. It is a pretty big chunk of change… it just depends on what you want to spend it on. You can get a lot more in this world for $50. Also, I didnt find mine that customizable? Did I miss something? :( I didnt select the font or the colors? I chose the planner design/pattern I wanted and what I wanted written on it and that was it! I hope I didnt miss something. I saw the special instructions box but I didnt think we could select fonts or things like that. They make the colors and patterns by the options I saw online – that is how I interpreted it work anyhow. So, regardless of all of that – I’m SO excited to receive mine even though it’s March. I’m going to even go backwards and fill in all of my work stuff from Jan – Feb b/c I always need to look back on it for reports and such! And I LOVED the packaging it came in – thanks for showing that.
