Filofax v. Erin Condren: Who Wins Out?

Hey y’all! Today I’m back with two exciting announcements. The first is that PSS has a brand new look — thanks to a sleepless Saturday night! I’ve been wanting to overhaul the look of PSS for a while now (it’s needed one for about two years now but I hadn’t found the time). I’m so thrilled with how it turned out–please take a look around and get to know the new site! Secondly, it’s Filofax video day!

I get requests on the daily from you guys for a Filofax organization video, as well as a video comparison between Filofax and Erin Condren. Today, I’m sharing both of those with you in one fell swoop. I hope you enjoy–make sure you are subscribed to my YouTube channel if you’re not–I post about 2-3 videos a week on average!

Filofax Planners

So the story behind how I got into Filofax: it started with the Kate Spade Debra Wellesley zip planner, which I stumbled upon somehow (maybe an instagram photo?) and snapped one up from my local Kate Spade outlet store. (They’re only sold in outlet stores, mind you.) I fell in love with the portability, the high-class feel, the binder system, and the endless amounts of creativity that a pair of creamy week-on-two-pages call for. So. Much. Washi.

After falling head over heels in love with my new planner, I began researching the Filofax community, since the Kate Spade planner pages are modeled after (and fit perfectly) the personal sized Filofax organizer. So then came the pink fluoro original Filofax. Then the yellow, thanks to a lovely German Filofax-enthusiast. Then the nude patent original——as seen in the video. It all spiraled downhill from there. Now, six planners later (two of which are A5 sized for home organization planning)…I can say that I am at a happy place with my Filofax collection.

I trade out my binders all the time–it just depends on my mood, and I love that about Filofax. While you can now change the covers on Erin Condren life planners–the large size and coil-bound system are just two big downsides to me that I didn’t know I disliked until I discovered the convenience of the Filofax organization system.

What are your thoughts on planners in general? Do you use a Filofax, Erin Condren, or other type of planner?

I am hooked on the Levenger Circa System, but am thinking about switching to something more inspiring (which is why really love Erin Condren’s system, it’s really creative and artsy. But at the same time Erin’s system is too inflexible for my taste).

I agree! I use the ARC system (similar to Levenger). As pretty and neat as I think E.C. system looks, I’m afraid it’s too inflexible for me. (And too big.) I really wish we had that fold out year-at-a-glance page available like Filofax people do.

Welcome to the planner world! Love your Filofax choices! If you think Filofax is expensive check out the Gillio world. There are a couple of Facebook groups if you’re curious. It’ll blow your mind! Happy Planning! :)

Thank you for this video! I bought a Kate Spade personal planner based on your instagram pics. Yeah crazy I know! I wanted to see what it was all about. I love my current Erin Condren planner but I was not so impressed with the 2015 one. I really thought they would change the colors of the month pages from last year. They do have great new features but for someone who uses the planner more and decorates only a little it just seemed like it was the same thing. I will most definitely use the filofax in the new year and leave my Erin Condren one for my desk at work. I’d love to see all the videos you mentioned and maybe one on your favorite filofax decorating washi, stickers, pen recommendations, and divider pages ideas. Thank you again! :)

<– world's biggest enabler. So do you like your kate spade planner? I friggin love the inserts. Today I'm carrying the wellesley again. completely agree with all you said about the 2015 planner – those were points I kind of alluded to in my review—how nothing much really changed except interchangeable covers and "coil clips" …which should have been introduced years ago.

Enabler indeed! I really love the Kate Spade planner. It’s a dark purple color. It was in good condition (previously used from ebay) but it did not have all the weekly pages. Which is fine I mostly wanted the planner to test out if I could see myself carrying the smaller size. I used a few of the notes pages it came with for a week and it is the perfect size. Like you said the case can be changed at will. I will definitely invest in the wellesley to start the new year. Do you know when the new designs come out? Thanks for sharing such great finds!

I love the new PSS look! I also just love that you’re doing videos on your Filofax stuff in general. It makes me feel better that I’m not the only one insane about keeping a planner.

They’re great but I recommend waiting until the 2015 inserts are released. It’ll be worth it! At this stage in the game you don’t want to pay for 12 months of inserts when you’ll only use 3 or 4. :)

I’ve been organizing via my smart phone. What motivated you to move to paper? I make lots of edits to things so I can see that a paper system (albeit via filofax) would look really messy after a while. Did the iPhone apps not do it for you?

    Hi Kristina!

Your site looks great! I wanted to send you a screenshot of how it’s appearing on my iPhone 5, however, since I can’t get the menu to collapse and so I can’t read the post. I thought this might be useful because there are probably lots of other readers like me who rarely use the computer to check for new posts — I do everything on my phone.

    Thanks,
    Jackie

Hi jackie – -thanks for sending me that. On my phone I can scroll up top to the original menu button and press the menu to collapse it again. Are you able to do that? Please let me know!

        • Jackie says

I can’t collapse. It’s worth noting that I started in Bloglovin and chose “open in Safari”. When I just type in your URL everything functions fine.

Love your new site, and would love to see videos of all the things you mentioned on the video…storage, home filofax, travel notebook. I love your videos.

  8. says

I would love to see a video on your Midori Traveler’s Notebook, your home binder filofax organization, how you store your filofax goodies, etc. Thank you for sharing! I recently converted to a Filofax from an EC LP for many of the same reasons as you, mostly because I wanted something more professional looking and while the EC LPs are fun, they’re not professional looking.

  9. Baljit says

Hi Kristina, thank you so much for your posts and your videos. They are so fun and inspiring :-) I am from Vancouver, Canada… do you think I would be able to buy the 2015 inserts online later this year?

Hi Kristina!! I am in love Wirh your planner charm! Who made that for you? I cannot find it in the planner groups!! :(
    HELP!

  11. Debbie Bax says

Love your videos! I am also a “Planner Nerd”, however mine needs some serious tweaking. I thought I could save money by just using spiral notebooks and putting sticky tabs as dividers. We’ll lets just say it was a flop. Between, full time job, home and family to manage and daughters wedding and an ill parent, I don’t know if I am coming or going. Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated. Love to see a video on your home one and do you travel with one?

  12. Evonne Wong says

It’s interesting but I am actually going from a Filofax to an Erin Condren because I need more space to write in. :) Love your videos by the way!

  13. meggieb says

I would LOVE to see how you’re learning to write with the Lamy. I have a new one as well and this is so new to me!

  14. Janelle says

LOVE your channel & blog! I notice a lot of interesting looking books in some of your videos & instagrams. How about reviewing your favorite beauty/grooming & interior design/lifestyle and fashion pictorial books. I love these genres and would like to see your picks! Thank you!

Hi Kristina! I just got a Filofax and decided to go with the Kate Spade 2015 pages per your video. The refill for 2015, however, do not include the dividers, ruler or anything other than the pages. I was wondering if you knew where I could get them? Or any suggestions? I’ve looked online to try and get the 2014 set for the last couple months and the dividers, etc. but the ones in the Personal size are no where to be found :( Help please!

  16. Veronica says
