Liquid Chrome Nails

I’d like nails dipped in metal, please.

Ever since I saw the chrome nails on Jak + Jil (above, with the cigarette and armor rings), I was smitten. How on earth could I get some like them? After a bit of research it turns out those nails were actually a Minx manicure, which costs upwards of $40, has to be professionally applied, and apparently doesn’t last all that longer than a regular manicure. With the amount of hand-washing I do every day as a medical professional, that means my chrome shininess would last all of about 24 hours. If I’m lucky.

So I went on an internet search spree, browsing nail polish blogs (this one is one of my favorites) and learned about the nail polish Chanel used on their Spring 2010 Haute Couture runway. It was actually a resurrection of a 2007 limited Europe-only edition of Chanel Duo Platinum Silver (which, sadly, is no longer available).

Other popular chrome polishes that also happen to be hard to find but are sworn by in the beauty community include Maybelline Mirror Magic & Stargazer Chrome. I recently purchased a whole slew of chrome & holographic type nail polishes and I fully intend to test them all and find my favorite.

Here’s what I purchased:

  • China Glaze Hologram
  • China Glaze Platinum Silver
  • China Glaze Fairy Dust
  • Orly Dazzle

Plus some other non-metallics, which you’ll likely see in an outfit post or two! One is an exact replica of Tiffany Blue, and the other is a passionfruit neon color, very bright and fun. Right now I’m wearing Chanel Black Pearl, which is a favorite of mine.

This is it for me this week, tomorrow is the big test and although I normally don’t post on weekends, there might be a post on Sunday if you want to drop by and say hi! Happy weekend!

I've been dying for a chrome/foil nail polish that doesn't require a special/rare type of manicure! And what a cool nail polish blog, I really like the look of the Sonia Kashuk Smoke and Mirrors polish. Can't wait to see what you say about these!

I'd love to see what your results are from the store brand polishes. I love the metal look from minx (especially the gold ones) but don't know how to re-create it! Such a fun look…

I actually have the Chanel nail polish you're referencing and it is incredible, sadly everybody that sees it wants to use it so it's down to the last little bits but it is also a crowd stopper when I wear it.

I have the picture from jak and jil, the one with the cigarette and heavy duty rings as my lap-top background. i have put it up on my inspiration board too.

You should try out the Sally Hansen quick dry silver polish. I find it to be super high shine too, and it reminds me of the minx look quite a bit! China Glaze also had one from their Christmas collection too… though because they're both regular old polishes, I find that there's something… missing? Or maybe it's just because my nails weren't buffed and a bit textured changing the look!

I'd heard about that one too! Must check it out. I went to Sally Beauty Supply which doesn't carry Sally Hansen (perhaps it's a fickle name thing?) but I keep reminding myself to check out that quick chrome pen that people keep talking about. it is the pen, right? Or is it something different?

Yup, it's a pen! SOOO easy to use (which is why I like it so much!). I know I've seen them at drugstores like Walgreens and CVS. The shine on it is pretty intense, and I like it because… it kind of rubs away in color as opposed to chipping? Then I don't peel it off so easily!

Hahah, fickle name thing! I bet that's totally it– cute! ;)

I've had the Shellac manicure and it lasted 3 full weeks of twelve hour shifts and hand washing with all that toxic stuff we use at the hospitals. 2 drawbacks for me on the Shellac, no pretty metallics, but it makes for a killer French manicure. Secondly it takes a FULL 10-15 minutes of soaking in 100% acetone (not your everyday nailpolish remover) to get off.

But I did have pretty nails for 3 weeks, and even my patients noticed =)

I had this done with the gel polish at it was amazing. Downside? Incredibly difficult to get off if you tried to do it at home.

I need gel polish in my life. I had heard it wasn't available in a mirror-like chrome like the photos above. I'd be more than happy to be corrected, because I need to try a gel manicure!!

I am hooked too! I love the armor rings (guantlet rings) I own one but am dying for more! Must search for metal nail polish!! Thanks for sharing this!

I have had the Minx before and it does last quite a bit longer than a regular manicure. I recommend waiting until you have a vacation. I got the shellac and the Minx was better. I love the Chrome too…very very cool, but never tried that color personally. The industrial look is so me, not on me personally but I’d decorate my whole house in Concrete and tool cabinets if my husband would let me…Oh well that’s what compromise is all about right? Anywho..I digress. I did get some great great medium gray polish from Ulta, looks really cool on the toes and is the prefect shade for all the grays this year–Ulta Concrete Evidence. Can’t believe how long it stays on for an Ulta shade!

That's so encouraging to hear! I heard mixed reports about both shellac and minx longevity but hearing that it lasted long for you is very encouraging. xoxo

Just out of curiosity have you looked into a gel manicure with this color? Have yet to invest in one for myself (I'm currently avoiding the nail salon cause I know my girl is going to lecture me on the state of my hands…) but I know a bunch of people who have done it and I've used them as an experiment of sorts. They really do last up to 3 weeks and continue looking good the whole time. Don't know if you have your hands in many chemicals but I do know they withstand ridiculous amounts of hand washing.

I have about forty different nail polishes but this ones trumps them all. I must see if I can ferret one out here in New Zealand. And I just might have to find someone to make me one of those Chanel metallic gloves. They're awesome!

Love the nails. I've actually had minx done before and I was pretty happy with the results! I did find that they lasted a bit longer than a normal manicure. They are certainly pricier but I think that if you have a special occasion, the overall look of them is really fantastic.

Love this! I have a LE Chanel polish from a few years back that's almost this good, but it's a little more brushed silver than buffed out mirror-ball silver. It's called (oddly enough) 'silver'. If I get around to posting it on my blog I'll let you know!
