My Favorite Foundations

In keeping with my equal love for beauty products as fashion, I decided after discovering the most amazing foundation ever that I would do a spur-of-the-moment vlog showing you my all-time favorite foundations I have ever used and loved. Bear in mind that most of the foundations mentioned have been vetted–in the sense that I have purchased and re-purchased this foundations for something going on 3 years or longer (especially with the first two I mention). However their status as cult fave in my book is being seriously challenged by a new competitor. Read (and watch) all about it, below!

Diorskin Forever Foundation SPF 25

This foundation has been in my makeup bag for over 3 years. I love this foundation so much! It is long-wearing (ya hear that, brides?) but has a soft finish that is almost powdery. I’ve worn this foundation nearly every day since discovering it ages ago. It has a SPF of 25 and it tends to be a little heavier than the “light to medium” coverage it claims – I find you really have to build this on sheer or it can easily “look” like you’re wearing foundation. But, if you buy this (especially if you have flaws or blemishes you are looking to cover up) you will not regret it. Best for normal/combination/oily skin as it tends to run on the matte side. Purchase »

 Yves Saint Laurent Teint Resist

Yet another in the beauty arsenal, though loved but not as much used, as I bought this probably during a summer when I was much darker than I usually am – so, sadly, it stays tucked away much more than it should, as it is a great foundation. I would say this is very very comparable to the Diorskin above, but would say it’s just ever so lightly less long lasting, and a little bit more coverage, perhaps. It does have more of a powdery finish and it is easier to build, but for some reason on me it’s just a little bit harder to blend than Diorskin Forever. That aside, it is a great, great foundation and one that I love love love! Purchase »

Jemma Kidd Light As Air Foundation

This is a fantastic, fantastic foundation. Especially for those who want a dewy glow (so especially great for dryer skin) but with a sheer, yet buildable finish. Absolutely amazing, and until recently, my all-time favorite. Sure, the packaging isn’t pretty, and it can be hard to find (I got mine on Beauty.com), and there aren’t many shades, but the feel of this foundation is amazing- almost like a moisturizer, but with medium coverage. Simply amazing and great for a dewy glow. As I tend to have combination skin, this sometimes wasn’t ideal so I would set with a translucent powder on top and be right as rain! Purchase »

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream

This is a BB Cream for the masses. Since it comes in several different shades, you don’t have to subscribe to the “one shade fits all mentality” (because, let’s face it, it doesn’t). As to whether it lives up to the BB Cream hype (of which I’m skeptical anyway), at the very least this is a lovely foundation for foundation-phobes. It’s in-between a tinted moisturizer and a light liquid foundation, is the best way I can describe it. Perfect for those days when I don’t want to mess with a foundation brush and the whole-shebang. Purchase »

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation

Dear sweet jeebus. This is amazing stuff. My most recent purchase, and quickly leap-frogged to the #1 spot, and straight into my makeup bag. What else can I say about this foundation? You’ll have to hear me talk about it on my video. Amazeballs. Purchase »

  • http://blog.thekinas.com Bettina

I keep meaning to try the Vita Lumiere foundation because a bunch of beauty bloggers I follow always use it in their video tutorials. And, you really really seemed to be in love with it so I think I need to finally take the plunge and try it. I’m always hesitant to try new foundations, but this one seems legit.

  • http://pieceofcakepeaceofmind@blogspot.com Kendra

I’ll have to try it out! I have been trying to navigate the extensive world of foundations, so thanks for making it easier!

  • http://kulturundstil.blogspot.com Anita

Thanks for this roundup, I’ve never worn foundation before and I’ve been looking for one! I’d heard fantastic things about the Jemma Kidd one too, but I tried the Chanel at the counter the other day and I think I have fallen in love!

Also, I like the new blog layout!

Your post is so timely for me, I just bought new foundation this weekend. Unfortunately, being a chocolate girl, my challenge is always a proper match. I typically have to use 2 different ones to get the right shade & many of them either leave me looking ashy or reddish//orange (so not a good look lol). I will have to check out your recommendations to see if they have something that works well for me. I’m thinking I’ll start with the Jemma Kidd since it moisturizes. Thanks for the information

I have heard fantastic things about Chanel’s foundation. I love all of their other product so it’s not surprising that their foundation knocks it out of the park!

    Thanks for the recommendation!!

Still getting used to the new blog layout, its an adventure every time I come here. Your site still hangs up for me for about 30 seconds upon entry. Loved the video and your skin/makeup does look totally different that what I am used to you wearing. You are beautiful either way of course, but this is a neat change.

What about Armani Silk?! It’s an all time favorite of mine!

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com Kristina

Oh my gosh yes! I used that foundation so much I ran out of it really quickly, and then I kind of forgot about it while using up my other foundations. You’re totally right- it’s another must-have foundation. (For those not initiated: It’s Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk)

  • http://www.pattyandlo.com Devon

I love dior skin. I’m also a big fan of the Bobbi brown foundation stick to get camera ready – its thicker than the average. No SPF tho so that’s a separate application! http://www.pattyandlo.com

  • http://www.theprettyfactor.blogspot.com Erica

So glad to read this post – I’m always looking for new products especially foundations!

  • http://www.pattyandlo.com Devon

I have loved diorskin for a long time – I like Bobbi Brown foundation stick to get camera ready – but no spf so that is a separate application!

As a teen, I used Lancome then I switched to Clinique. Strangely, in my twenties, I became allergic to Clinique and was recommended to Shiseido. I have been using Shiseido for about 7 years now and I am becoming bored with it. Thanks for the video. I will definitely try Chanel and see if it’s awesome for my skin.

    • Chaz

Helen, I have had a similiar experience. I can’t use anything Clinique anymore and I was using Bare Minerals before I started having weird reactions to it too. I’ve been using Shideido for a couple of years and I just don’t feel like it’s doing anything to help my skin. It does just fine as a foundation, but doesn’t give my skin anything extra, just makes it look okay. Thinking of trying Chanel too!

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com Kristina

Just keep in mind that Chanel foundations have a bit of a scent to them so if you’re allergic to fragrances in cosmetics, Chanel might not be right for you!

  • http://whatimlovinglately.blogspot.com/ Amy

I’m currently using Vita Lumiere and I love it! For those who are thinking about trying it just remember Chanel makeup is heavily perfumed.

    • Chaz

Thanks for that Amy. I can’t have any kind of fragrance in my skin products due to allergies. Great to know!

  • http://www.littlegirlbigworld.com Ashleigh

Thanks for sharing, I’m anxious to try the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation, sounds amazing! Have you tried the Illusion D’ombre shadows? I think you would love!

  • http://daisiesnchains.blogspot.com Jenn

This is an incredibly helpful post. Thank you so much for your thorough comments on each product. I’m basically going to print this out and take it with me to Sephora! :)

  • http://www.doyouspeakgossip.com/ Call me M @ DoYouSpeakGossip?

Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation sounds really interesting. I should definitely try it. Thank you so much for sharing your favorite foundations with us! :)

  • http://beautytidbits.com Harshleen@BeautyTidbits

I really want to try that Jemma Kid foundation after your review! It sounds great for my dry skin.

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com Kristina

If you have dry skin you are going to LOVE the jemma kidd. I wouldn’t recommend the Vitalumiere Aqua (although you could try regular Vitalumiere, it’s for dry skin) because it can be a bit drying. The jemma kidd will give you a dewy finish!

  • http://www.getfiercestyle.com MJ

Thanks so much for the review!! I am so particular when it comes to foundation, because, like you said, you don’t want to look like your wearing it. The only one I’ve used for the past three years is a liquid, medium coverage foundation from Mary Kay. I do want to try my hand at the Chanel one though!

  • http://megansilianoff.blogspot.com/ Megan Silianoff

Hey Kristina! Are you taking suggestions for vlogs? =) I’d love to hear what you use to take all that make-up off! I have the Clarisonic but would be interested to hear what cleansers are your faves to use with it! (Or just your cleansing routine in general.)

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com Kristina

Absolutely I’m taking suggestions for vlogs! And you can always leave a comment on YouTube if you prefer browsing over there (but here’s just fine as well)! I’ll definitely make a note of your request for a cleansing routine vlog! Thanks Megan :)

You know I never really got into the Georgio Armani foundation, I don’t know why, maybe because I never bought an entire bottle, and just sampled it. I’m actually partial to Laura Mercier & Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse.

  • Leigh

I just discovered your blog a little bit ago and just love all of the great information and tips! I’d love to try the Vitalumiere Aqua but I have rosacea and my skin tends to be a little dry, maybe I’ll try the regular kind. I looked at the Jemma Kidd foundation at beauty.com and noticed that it has salicylic acid. I’m 35 and use a light retinol product, so I’m not sure that they should be combined.

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com Kristina

The vitalumiere aqua has alcohol and a strong fragrance (all chanel foundations have a strong fragrance) so in your case I would recommend staying far away from them. Salicylic acid actually helps with redness due to acne, and i think (in my non-professional opinion) they can be combined with retinols, sparingly. Just remember to wear sunscreen. I would recommend a BB cream for you, actually! (the real ones, not the americanized version, although you might like the smashbox one above). Skin 79 I think is the brand that is popular among youtube beauty gurus. But if you have dark skin you’re better sticking with the smashbox.

      • Leigh

Thank you so much for the recommendations!!

  • http://diamondsandtulle.blogspot.com Vivian

Can’t wait to try the Smashbox BB cream!

  • Karen

I’ve been a MAC girl forever, and recently tried the Bare Minerals starter kit. I use a primer (have yet to find one I love) but it does not go on creamy like they claim. I am 46, so maybe I’m too “old” for it?! I like a dewy finish with a little powder my t-zone. Any suggestions?

    • http://prettyshinysparkly.com Kristina

Try MAC’s Strobe Cream – it’s not so much a primer in terms of silicone, but it’s moisturizing and creates an amazing dewy finish that is less “hi i’m wearing highlighter” and more “i’m lit from within”. You’ll love it!

      • Karen

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I do a lot of online shopping and a lot of research on my purchases (nerd alert!) I have very mixed feelings about online customer reviews. I think like most things, people are much more apt to comment if something is negative. So results can be skewed (IMO). I am on a budget too, but I have wasted a lot of money on drug store purchases that aren’t the right shade for me. Like clothing, you also need to consider the cost per wear.

I’ve been a make-up girl (wanted to say whore!) for as long as I can remember. My favorite thing to do at my Grandma Dot’s house was dig through her make-up drawers, and put on her make-up. Clinique lipstick in Fresh Strawberry (bright pink) and blue eye shadow. Looooved it all!

I’d like to think I could be your older sister (ha ha!) but I’m probably closer to your mom’s age. Seeing her wedding dress and the fact that gorgeous YOU are her daughter… your mom must be a babe. So I’m just gonna throw out the idea of a VLOG starring your mom. Great idea, huh?!!! Your followers can’t all be 20 yr. old babes. Just think about it! I did have another foundation ? but I’ve already been way too wordy. Dang it!

Loooove the blog! Can’t say enough great things about it! Thanks again.

        P.S. I’m 46 : )

Your foundation does look amazing! It’s always a great feeling when you find a new favourite cosmetic tool that trumps what you had before! I really like your vlogs and will continue to watch them, but will admit I sometimes skip through some of the video if they are a bit longer. I just wanted to suggest making your videos a wee bit shorter (for the many of us who have shorter attention spans). Sometimes I’ve watched the full length because I do believe you have good info to share!
