My Morning Skincare Routine

With today’s post comes a highly requested video – my skincare routine! I decided to break it down into a two-parter, to make it easier to digest. I know my videos can tend to get a bit long otherwise! Keep an eye out for my evening skincare routine, coming up next. Click to watch the video after the jump!

I’ve never thought about using a sunscreen prior to makeup. I use a BB cream with SPF 30 in it every day and now I’m wondering if that is enough sun protection? I’m not outside much during the day, so my sun exposure is very minimal during week days. Thanks for putting this in my head!

On most days the SPF 30 included in your BB cream should be enough, but it depends on your skin’s natural shade/color. Pale skin has an inherent natural SPF of only something like 3.9, whereas darker (such as African American) skin tones have a natural SPF of 14 or so. Paler skin has less melanin to protect against the sun and thus requires more “external” protection with SPF. I think everyone, no matter their skin tone or age, should protect with as much SPF as is physically viable for them. If you’re going to be out in the direct sunlight during the worst hours, protect yourself with clothing and a hat as well. xo

Thanks so much! I’m a ginger and that means I’m paler than you! I always use at least a 70+ SPF if I intend on being out in the sun, but for work days I stick with my BB cream. I also consider it a good thing that I run in the morning before the sun comes up, it’s rough, but I tell myself that getting my miles in without exposing myself to sun exposure is a good thing.

I’m really curious about Michael Todd after this video! (I think you also mentioned his products in another video if I’m not mistaken!) Don’t know if we have the line here. I would love to try the “black gel” cleanser, that’s pretty interesting!

Michael Todd is one of those rare gems that actually does what it claims, and doesn’t resort to using nasty chemicals to do so. #notsponsored

I used to have a charcoal wash from Lush and I think it ended up making my skin worse and I tried out a charcoal mask from Origins recently and broke out two days later (after a couple of good skin months). I know everyone loves using it on their skin but do you think that there are some skin types that just have bad reactions to it? I feel like our skin tone is similar and yours looks beautiful!

I’m a big Aveda fan and I regularly use the foaming cleanser and acne relief pads from the Outer Peace line. I have sensitive skin, but not necessarilly oily, and there aren’t a lot of products that don’t dry out my skin and cause my face to redden. Luckily for my skin, natural ingredients don’t irritate my skin like products with a lot of chemicals. Michael Todd seems like a great brand that will work for my skin and I definitely want to try the products you’ve mentioned, along the Jojoba Charcoal Scrub and the Concentrated C Serum. My skin is also olive toned, and if that isn’t enough already, I’m pale during the winter and somewhat tan in the summertime. That makes finding makeup especially difficult! I don’t wear very much makeup, but I have been thinking about trying the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream because it adjusts to match your skin tone. Do you have any recommendations for BB creams? Thanks!!

    Sincerely,
Frances of Chantilly Wishes & Chiffon Dreams

Didn’t know about this brand but just checked out the site and looks good. Too many products out there that have ingredients which are known irritants and worse toxic. With my sensitive skin i’m always on the lookout for ‘safe cosmetics’ There’s also a great video on the Michael Todd site about this very point, check it out!
