Wednesday Confessional (Or Why I Dislike Anthropologie Right Now)

by Kristina on February 24, 2010 · 14 comments

Confession: I started out with the idea to write this post thinking that what I discovered at Anthropologie would be soft & pretty & beautiful & blogworthy.

This was not the case.

Normally I am a huge fan of Anthropologie’s eclectic yet dreamy finds: clothing, decor, accessories…But when I logged on to Anthropologie’s website (yes I said logged on, and I’m not sure why, but I’m leaving it there just to be a nut) I was…underwhelmed.

“I know you can be overwhelmed, and underwhelmed…but can you ever just be “whelmed”?

–10 Things I Hate About You

Welcome back. As I was saying, I was underwhelmed. But first, let’s roll the pictures — commentary later.

Be my guest and purchase any of the above if you want to look like (1) a pregnant warty person (pregnancy is cute, but not when you’re not preggers), (2) a middle-aged schoolkid (think about that for a second), (3) (4) (5) dowdy and unattractive.

I’m sorry, but even the prettiest of girls cannot pull this stuff off. Even their dresses were, as a whole, uninspiring. Try to see the whole collection at once and you may get what I mean.

Before you all come back at me with “But what about this!”s and “Oh yeah, take a look at THIS!”s, there were a few things that I found pleasantly attractive (but not enough to purchase…sorry Anthro, but you cannot have $348 of my money for a dress. Or a shirt. Or pretty much any one item).

Um, that’s about it. I do love this top, though!

Confession: I may or may not have composed this post in my head while eating a slice of day-old pizza, rewarmed in the microwave, with a fork and knife, standing at my kitchen counter. Hey, microwaved pizza gets a little soggy (but still delicious!) and I don’t like to get messy. With things. In general. But especially grease. Peeve alert!!

Confession: I may or may not have typed this entire post laying in bed, eating two brownies I baked last night. I came home and collapsed (following the pizza encounter above) after an exchausting clinical exam (called an OSCE) as part of my medical school curriculum. (Yeah, did you know? I’m a medical student.)

Yes, that is a paper towel on my chest holding two very fabulous fudge & walnut brownies which I consumed so quickly, that I channeled the very high Drew Barrymore in Never Been Kissed. Fortunately, it was a heavenly twenty seconds that the brownies and I will never forget.

I’m introducing a new column! It’s called Wednesday Confessional and will fulfill my urge to share more of myself with you guys. (Great, they groaned.) It’s going to be very interactive, so leave a comment with YOUR confession (it can be about anything) below. Or leave one anonymously on my formspring. Wednesday Confessional joins its sisters Etsy Finds Thursday and Friday Favorites.

I’m really, really, really, really excited about some things I have planned for PSS in March. Starting with March 1st, when the new issue of The Monthly comes out (revamped, polished, fun to read, and FREE GOODIES!). I’m also really excited to tell you that there is a very wonderful giveaway coming in March by a very well-known, respected brand…but I just can’t say anything about it. Yet. Stay tuned!

Since I’ve been really busy with exams (this week, and next week–after that, Spring Break! Last one EVER), I haven’t had much inspiration to post (except today, duh) but I wanted a place where I could collect little things during random web surfs. So I created, “Inspired“. It’s a new tumblr blog (tumblog?) with just photos, images, a quote here and there–but really very little text. I hope you’ll like it. The link has also been added to the navigation bar for your convenience. If you’re a Tumblr, follow me & I will follow your gorgeous bottom back!

So…what’s your Confession?

The social bar above is my tip jar. Pin, Like, and Tweet if you please!

Love, Kristina

Of COURSE you write this blog while attending med school, and of COURSE you look like that while wolfing down pizza and brownies. I’m going to go punch myself in the face now.

Just saw on your blog that your hubby is in med school too! I’m down south here at UT Houston – is he at UT Southwestern, then?

I was underwhelmed as well!
I’ve since moved on to modcloth and free people internet window shopping for dresses.

I have a confession…I don’t get the bid deal about Anthropolgie. Yes they have SOME cute items but their prices are crazy! I am no fashionista, but I do like nice, pretty clothes. I just don’t get it. I am more of a NY and Company type of girl, with a little bit of Old Navy thrown in there!

I SO agree with you. On so many levels. Re: Anthro (I don’t believe in such overinflated hype) Re: NY&Co Yes! Re: Old Navy Yes! It’s been a while but I should check out their latest stuff.

Confession: I also love Target & American Eagle. Probably a little too much.

I usually love Anthropologie, but you’re right: the above items are atrocious. Plus the prices are way out there.

I like this post. :) Your honesty is refreshing.
