What’s In My Carry-On

by Kristina on December 20, 2010 · 36 comments

As HB and I hop onto a plane to London (hopefully), and then on to Oslo…and then 4 hours to the little fjord town my family cabin is nestled in, there are a few essentials that I am wearing or taking in my Saddleback satchel carry-on. This black cheetah parka I’ll be wearing (or carrying on my arm til we get to Oslo, anyway), and these Ugg boots will keep my feet toasty warm, and wearing them on the plane will save a lot of weight and space in my checked luggage. Also, can’t forget about my DSLR, iPad (for movies & e-magazines), my silky soft NAP travel pillow, and the latest January issues of my favorite magazines. There’s also my moleskine diary, fresh tinted lip treatment in rosé, and evian mineral water facial spray to battle the dry, recirculated plane air.

What are your air travel essentials?

UPDATE: Our flights have been canceled due to the inclement weather. We are working on just being able to get to Norway.

UPDATE 2: We are still going to Norway, but a day later and an extra $900 per person out of our wallets. At least we’ll be spending Christmas in Norway…and we’ll be together, which is all that matters! (Oh, and avoiding London like the plague…sorry Brits, you guys just do not know how to handle blizzards! lol)

The social bar above is my tip jar. Pin, Like, and Tweet if you please!

Love, Kristina

My essentials? My Burt's Bees Replenishing lip balm with Pomegranate oil, magazines, my iphone with headphones for music/games/etc, a big carry-on tote bag to put EVERYTHING and your mom in, an extra-large bottle of water (Think a 1.5L Evian, or a big Smart Water), and comfortable ballet flats that are easy to slip on and off at airport security. Oh yeah…and pants with some stretch in them (thank goodness for Jeggings), and a comfy, warm, but still chic cardigan.

Well, if it's a short flight, I make sure to have entertainment – ipod, magazines, a book, etc. As well as good lip balm, hand cream and a bottle of water. If the flight is longer than 3 hours, I bring a pillow and ambien :)

I think it's going to be a pillow & ambien for me. :)

So this year I'm trying to bring a film camera in my carry-on and I'm worried about the film! But I will also definitely have magazines and my camera. I also always bring moisturizer and my glasses in case I need to take out my contacts!

Also sorry about the weird really short post before this, I don't know what happened. Sigh.

I believe you can tell them you have a film camera in your bag…they might just visually inspect it or something…just a thought! my understanding is I don't know if they even ruin film anymore…but i would always doublecheck! or put the film in your pocket ;)

I believe only ISO's above 400 get affected. Other than than you should be fine with the film. I'd still check – don't take my word for it! Sometimes I create my own reality!

Seriously envious of every-single-thing listed here! I think I'm going to have to start one of those registry/wishlists so that my husband can start buying me "just because" gifts :)
I have to wear some sort of hoodie when traveling (great for pulling over my head and keeping warm), plus I always have ear plugs, books/magazines, a sketchbook, and LOTS of food/snacks/water (I'm always hungry…)

Love that bag!! I hope it all works out girl! My travel essentials are a large scarf that can double as a blanket, good headphones, giant bottle of water (I get puffy!), warm fuzzy socks, and good magazines. Oh, also lots of layers so I may adjust my outfit as the temp fluctuates.

Layering is definitely a must….thanks for reminding me!

Sorry to hear about the cancelations and best of luck in getting there. You might be interested in Rolf Potts "No Luggage" challenge. He circled the globe this past year with nothing but the clothes on his back.

I always have too much. Starting with 2 cameras and ultra comfy shoes, 2 iPods (one for each of us, my hubby and I) magazines/books/crosswords and tons of food. I get bored easily and am always hungry. Also some plane friendly facial washcloths – so needed for freshening up – and hand lotion.

I like Ponds Original washclothes. The scent is super light and fresh and they leave your skin feeling so soft and refreshed! They also remove makeup easily.

The two cams are one professional and one purse size. The 3rd (a size in-between) goes in the suitcase, most the time. I love taking pictures!

For the washcloth, I use the Mary Kay ones (they're cheap and work great.) You get them wet with just a bit of water and they foam up, then you rinse it all and still wash your face with it. They're really good.

I'm so glad I found your blog! You're such a doll! Have fun on your trip!

Oh gosh, do travel safely in that weather!

I also have a Moleskine; can't leave the house without it. :)

Such a cute satchel.

Hi! UK reader here! Yes we are officially useless in extreme weather!
Although they do seem to make a lot more fuss when the weather is bad in the south (around London). I live in the North East (near Newcastle) and we have had bad weather to a few weeks now and we seem to be coping ok! Are you still flying through London airports? What are your new plans?

Haha Fay your comment cracked me up. Not useless, but maybe just…hysterical? :) We've booked different flights now to cities that aren't strangers to snow (Chicago, Stockholm, and finally Oslo) so we shouldn't be bothered by snow delays anymore…cross my fingers!!

That sounds like a good plan! Avoid the UK at all costs!
Hope you have an amazing Christmas x
